金田一耕助（古谷一行饰）被一个自称为矢部杢卫（内田朝雄饰）的人请求调查一起事件，并前往信州射水。这个地方有两个名门，分别是矢部家和玉造家，但两家长期以来关系不睦。然而23年前，杢卫的长子和玉造家的女儿朋子打算私奔，导致朋子跳入古井戏中自杀。她的尸体至今未被找到，只留下一封将自己比喻为蝴蝶，意味着死后会复活的遗书。 耕助到达射水后，正值富豪继承人鲇川玛丽（有森也实饰）和她的母亲君江（有森也实饰）的欢迎派对。杢卫实际上怀疑朋子可能还活着，而那个人可能是君江。因此，他请求金田一调查23年前事件的真相。然而，在派对进行期间，君江失踪了。随后前往寻找君江的杢卫遗体却被发现了……。
