Coriolanus är Roms store soldat och hjälte men han avskyr folket. Hans extrema åsikter sätter igång upplopp och staden blir ett blodbad. När han utmanövreras av politiker och till och med sin egen mor Volumnia bannlyses han från Rom. Han gör då gemensam sak med sin ärkefiende Tullus Aufidius och de två marscherar mot Rom för att förstöra staden.
