Ein Dorf in Schleswig-Holstein wird durch den gewaltsamen Tod eines kleinen Mädchens erschüttert. Die siebenjährige Caroline Götz wird erstickt in einem Schuppen aufgefunden. Bei der Obduktion werden aber keine Spuren eines Missbrauchs gefunden. Die beiden Kommissarinnen Lizzy Krüger und Marion Ahrens von der Mordkommission in Lübeck übernehmen die Ermittlungen. Schnell geraten zwei Hauptverdächtige in ihr Visier: Chris Götz, der arbeitslose Onkel der kleinen Caroline, und Peter Steffens, Hausmeister an der örtlichen Grundschule. Steffens hat eine bislang allgemein unbekannte dunkle Vergangenheit. Als Zwölfjähriger, vor über 25 Jahren, hatte er ein kleines Mädchen umgebracht. Es gibt Ähnlichkeiten mit dem aktuellen Fall. Für Marion Ahrens passt Steffens ins Täterprofil. Bis auf weiteres hält sie ihn für den typischen Rückfalltäter.
