Jerry Robinson is een politieagent die voor zijn leven moet vechten als hij in een zuidelijk stadje de moord op een leider van de Ku Klux Klan moet oplossen. Zonder veel succes probeert Robinson zich aan te passen aan het 'jongens-onder-elkaar' sfeertje dat binnen het politiecorps van het slaperige stadje heerst. Al snel wordt duidelijk dat zijn onderzoek door middel van leugens en bedrog wordt gesaboteerd. Als de situatie voor Robinson levensgevaarlijk wordt, moet hij samen met de enige jonge ooggetuige van de moord onderduiken. Geïndoctrineerd door racistische leugens gaat het zoontje van de vermoorde Klan-leider tegen Robinson tekeer. Maar dan ontdekt hij dat de man die hij veracht de enige is die hij werkelijk kan vertrouwen.
