Christine, een knap 16-jarig blondje, besluit haar saaie leven te ontvluchten. Al liftend gaat zij op zoek naar vrijheid en geluk. Haar leven bestaat een poosje uit rock-'n-roll en neonlichten en ze heeft veel plezier met haar nieuwe vrienden die ze op haar werk bij een reizend circus heeft leren kennen. Dan loopt zij de jonge knappe Duitser Walter Maresch tegen het lijf. Zijn liefde voor haar wordt zo hevig, dat hij dreigt zelfmoord te plegen als ze niet met hem wil trouwen.
