Rylov overhears how Sergei Vadimovich persuades Dusya to poison him and gives her poison. The next morning, Nikolai refuses all meals. Ivan Danilovich comes to visit the Rylovs and announces that he is going to make Kolya a captain. Dusya, after consulting with Dasha and her mother, decides not to poison Rylov yet. While they are consulting, Nikolai persuades Colonel Sharpening to play a small performance in order to bring the treacherous wife to clean water.
