Meghal Alexander Balfour, s fia, David egyedül marad. Egyetlen rokona bácsikája, Ebenezer Balfour, ám mielőtt tisztáznák a vagyoni és örökösödési jogaikat, David egy Amerikába tartó hajó fedélzetén találja magát fogolyként.
