בשנת 1990 התרחשה מהפכה אזרחית בסיירה ליאון. חוויותיהם של שלושה אנשים זרים שאמונה והומניות מחברת אותם: דני ארצ'ר, מסיונר דרום אפריקאי, סולומון וואנדי שנחטף מביתו ומוכרח לעבוד במחצבת יהלומים, ומאדי בוון, עיתונאית אמריקאית אידיאליסטית. השלושה יוצאים למסע של גאולה במטרה לאחד את סולומון עם בני משפחתו.
