Πρωταγωνιστής της ταινίας είναι ο Άρτουρς, ένα παλικάρι 16 ετών, όταν η γερμανική προέλαση του 1915 στη Ρωσία αναστατώνει βίαια το αγρόκτημα της οικογένειάς του, μετατρέποντάς τον σε έναν από τους χιλιάδες εκτοπισμένους. Μετά τη δημιουργία ενός τάγματος Λετονών τυφεκιοφόρων για να πολεμήσει για τον τσάρο και τη δική τους ρημαγμένη πατρίδα, ο Άρτουρς στρατεύεται μαζί με τον μεγαλύτερο αδελφό του Έντγκαρς και τον πατέρα του, και μέσα από τις θηριωδίες του πολέμου προσπαθεί να βγάλει τον αγωνιστή που κρύβει μέσα του.
