Ο Walt Koontz (Robert De Niro) είναι ένας πρώην αστυνομικός, διακριθείς για την ανδρεία που επέδειξε κατά την εκτέλεση του καθήκοντος. Αποστρέφεται τους τραβεστί-γείτονές του, καθώς δεν ταιριάζουν σε τίποτε με το ανδρικό μοντέλο που πιστεύει και υπηρετεί. Όταν μέλη συμμορίας επιτεθούν όμως στο διαμέρισμά τους, θα προσπαθήσει να βοηθήσει, αλλά πριν προλάβει παθαίνει εγκεφαλικό επεισόδιο. Με μερική αναπηρία στην αριστερή πλευρά και προβλήματα ομιλίας απευθύνεται για βοήθεια (μαθήματα μουσικής-ορθοφωνίας) στον γείτονα-αρτίστα Rusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Εντωμεταξύ η περίεργη υπόθεση κλοπής βρώμικου χρήματος, που οδήγησε στην επίθεση της συμμορίας εκκρεμεί...
