Ο Πέπερ Φλιντ Μπάζμπι, γνωστός στους δικούς του ως «μικρό αγόρι», είναι ένα 7χρονο αγόρι που γίνεται συνεχώς ρεζίλι λόγω του μικρόσωμου παρουσιαστικού του. Οι νταήδες και τα παρατσούκλια όμως δεν τον πτοούν, μια και μοιράζεται μια υπέροχη σχέση με τον πατέρα του. Οι δυο τους είναι αχώριστοι και για τον Πέπερ είναι ο μοναδικός του φίλος. Τα πάντα σωριάζονται γύρω του όταν ο πατέρας του καλείται να υπηρετήσει στον Β` Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, πολεμώντας του Γιαπωνέζους στον Ειρηνικό. Η μόνη ελπίδα του μικρού είναι πλέον να επιστρέψει ο πατέρας του, ώσπου η οικογένεια λαμβάνει γράμμα πως ο πατέρας έχει σταλθεί αιχμάλωτος σε στρατόπεδο συγκέντρωσης. Απελπισμένος, ο Πέπερ βάζει πλώρη να καταφέρει το απίστευτο: να τερματίσει τον πόλεμο, ώστε να επιστρέψει ο μπαμπάς του.
