V newyorkském přístavu někdo zabije turisty a k případu jsou přiděleni detektivové Nick a Walter. Starosta pošle svou asistentku Rachel, aby dohlížela na vyšetřování. Pak něco napadne vlečnou loď a Nick s Walterem začnou tušit, že vrahem není člověk. Když konečně objeví vraždící chobotnici, při souboji s ní Walter zahyne a Nick musí požádat o pomoc Rachel. Policie ale zatkne údajného pachatele a jenom Nick ví, že skutečný vrah je pořád na svobodě. S pomocí speciálního potápěčského týmu se mu podaří najít úkryt osmichapadlového zabijáka a nebezpečný lov na netvora začíná. Tomu se ale daří unikat a navíc pronikne do tunelu, ve kterém je autobus s Rachel a dětmi...
