Leo Borlock je průměrný student střední školy Mica High. Má slušné známky, je členem školní pochodové kapely a vyhovuje mu, že v ničem nevybočuje z řady. To se ale změní, když pozná Stargirl Carawayovou, sebevědomou a zajímavou studentku se slabostí pro ukulele, která vyčnívá z davu. Je laskavá, vidí zázraky v běžných věcech a těmi nejprostšími gesty se dotýká životů druhých. Její excentričnost a podmanivá osobnost okouzlí Lea i zbytek studentů a Stargirl se z ignorované a zesměšňované dívky stane dívkou přijímanou a chválenou a pak zase zpět, s čímž se Leo jen těžce vypořádává. Film je oslavou individuality, laskavosti a síly lidského ducha.
