A principis del segle XX Karen Blixen (Streep), una dona europea de gran coratge, arriba a Kenya per dirigir una plantació de cafè amb el seu marit (Brandauer), un faldiller incorregible amb qui no s'ha casat per amor. Per sorpresa seva, Karen s'adona que a poc a poc s'està enamorant de la terra, de la seva gent... i de Denys Finch-Hatton (Redford), un enigmàtic caçador aventurer.
