L'inspector en cap Dreyfus de la Interpol està contentíssim de la desaparició de l'inspector, Clouseau que tant li havia amargat la vida. La llàstima és que l'han fet responsable de la recerca del desaparegut, però Dreyfus, per assegurar-se que no es trobi Clouseau, tria a través d'un ordinador el pitjor detectiu del món. El resultat és un home anomenat Aldous que es presenta acompanyat d'un pèssim agent de policia, Clifton. A tots dos els toca simultaniejar dues feines: buscar Clouseau i també el fabulós diamant La Pantera Rosa. I s'hi dediquen amb una incompetència immensa.
