Judith Traherne (Bette Davis) és una rica hereva de Long Island que descobreix que té un tumor cerebral i és operada per un expert neurocirurgià, el Doctor Frederick Steele (George Brent). Tot i que l'operació resulta tot un èxit, el tumor resulta ser maligne. A partir de llavors, la Judith decideix gaudir de la vida.
