El vell xèrif mexicà-americà Bob Valdez sempre ha estat un refugi de seny en una terra de bojos quan es tractava de defensar la llei i l'ordre. Però el contrabandista d'armes Frank Tanner és cobejós i impulsiu. Quan Tanner provoca un tiroteig que causa la mort d'un home innocent i Valdez li demana que compensi econòmicament la vídua, Tanner es nega a fer-ho i humilia severament Valdez, que farà justícia i venjarà el seu honor, sense importar el que costi.
