En Brad i la Kate, una parella de San Francisco, veuen fracassar els seus plans de passar el Nadal en un lloc exòtic lluny de la seva família. Contra tot el previst, hauran de passar el Nadal assistint a quatre celebracions familiars en el mateix dia. Però aquestes reunions, en les quals surten a relluir les pors de la infància i les ferides de l'adolescència, posaran en perill la relació d'en Brad i la Kate.
