Nakon što je društvo u koje je vjerovala uništeno nasiljem i željom za moći, Tris se zajedno s Tobiasom odlučuje otići i istražiti granice svijeta koji ne poznaje. Ali nova otkrića i istine koje izlaze na vidjelo ponovno će zahtijevati od Tris da se suoči s nepredvidljivošću ljudske prirode, ali i sa samom sobom. Istovremeno, i Tris i Tobias moraju da se suoče s činjenicom da se njihov položaj u društvu promijenio, te oni koji su bili povlašteni to više nisu.
